Smartphone maker Blackberry will introduce free voice calls on its instant messenger app over next month through an update which will also allow users to surf and create BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) channels. They have also said that it will also include voice messages just like whatsapp.
This free calling feature available across Android, iPhone and BlackBerry OS 5 upwards smartphones. Around 100 million people worldwide use BBM. The company may also launch BBM for Windows devices in the future, the only operating system that does not support BBM at present.
BBM Voice will compete with voice over IP (VoIP) services like Skype as well as Facebook Messenger to allow smartphone users to make calls over WiFi or cellular data, and avoid racking up minutes on their phone plans. BlackBerry has not announced when the update would roll out to all users, but said last October that it would become available “within months” to Android and iPhone users.
